Dana Attains Twenty Five Years Of
Leadership With Central Tire Inflation Systems
KALAMAZOO, Michigan … Dana Holding Corporation this year is celebrating its 25th anniversary as the world’s leading supplier of Central Tire Inflation Systems (CTIS) to the military and commercial vehicle industries. Initially developed to meet the demanding requirements of the U.S. military in 1984, Dana is now supplying CTIS to original equipment manufacturers (OEM) in North America and several OEMs throughout the world, including a variety of specialty vehicle manufacturers.
“Dana CTIS is selected by more military vehicle OEMs than all of the competitive systems combined,” said James Beverly, chief engineer of Advanced Chassis Control Systems for Dana. “The product is used extensively by the U.S. Army and Marine Corps, as well as NATO forces and in a variety of commercial vehicle applications such as oil field exploration and construction.”
During the product’s 25-year history, Dana has secured more than 50 CTIS patents. CTIS provides the ability to deflate a vehicle’s tires on-the-fly to create a bigger footprint to enhance vehicle mobility in off-highway applications, and is especially effective in soft, sandy soils. Dana CTIS can be configured to meet a variety of customer specific needs, including a variety of wheel valve and operator interface options. The product also supports industry standard data links to provide simple interfacing to on-board logistics and OEM defined operator interfaces.
“Dana CTIS has proven to be robust and reliable over its 25-year run, having undergone numerous enhancements and upgrades,” added Beverly. “For example, all of our electric control units, pneumatic control units and proprietary algorithms have been validated and tuned as a system to meet customer requirements with exceptional performance. And it is commonplace for our engineering and new vehicle development teams to accommodate new vehicle platforms in a fast, efficient and cost-effective manner to meet a wide range of customer-specific requests.”
Dana’s latest CTIS line addition is a new Mechatronic Control Unit (MCU) design that has resulted in an optimized package specifically designed to meet the requirements of 4X4 MRAP (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected) military vehicles. The MCU design integrates electronic, computer and mechanical engineering into one package to bring about weight reduction and improved reliability.
In January Dana expanded its manufacturing assembly area for the Tire Management product line at the company’s Henderson, Kentucky facility which provides additional capacity to meet the growing demand for CTIS solutions. The expansion also included new, modern, computer-controlled test machines which ensure that all products function according to vehicle manufacturer requirements.
